The sights in Prague make the city ideal for a city trip. This capital of the Czech Republic is also called the golden city. The beautiful historic center is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Prague people pay with the Czech Koruna (The Czech Crown). Prices in the Czech Republic are lower than in the Netherlands. Restaurants are generally cheaper if you don’t eat in busy areas.

The city center of Prague has many attractions and sights. These are easily accessible by tram, metro and by foot. Buy a city map so that you can find everything easily. With the Prague-Card you can travel by tram for free and you get a discount on various sights in Prague. We thought this card was a bit too expensive and I think you end up cheaper when you pay separately for the public transport and the sights.

Various cards are available for the public transport. You can choose from;

  • 30 min card (24 CZK),
  • 90 min card (32 CZK),
  • day ticket (110 CZK),
  • or a 3-day ticket (310 CZK).

Public transport in Prague is fortunately not expensive. With these tickets you can travel by tram, metro and bus between all sights in Prague. They are for sale at vending machines on the street, tobacconists and on the bus and tram itself (you pay a little more for this). The card starts when you stamp it in the public transport.

For current information, see the official site for public transport in the Czech Republic.

Prague is a pretty hip city. Many alternative young people are walking around. There are also a lot of people walking their dogs on the street. This makes Prague special in its own way.

Top places in Prague

Prague Castle

Prague Castle was built in the 9th century and consists of several squares and churches. From the hill where the castle is located, you immediately have a beautiful view on the city. At a kiosk at the beginning you can buy two different combination tickets, the short route and the long route. We chose the short route (St. Vitus Cathedral, the old Royal Palace, the permanent exhibition The Story of Prague, St George’s Basilica, the golden street and Dalibor tower) and that turned out to be more than enough. I found the St. Vitus Cathedral to be the highlight, it was really beautiful. The golden street is not much. It is very short and is not much to see in my opinion.

Petrín Hill

From the Ujezd metrostop you can take a cable car up the hill. You will find beautiful gardens, the Petrín observation tower and a mirror maze. You can get out halfway if you want to eat something. Do not choose the first restaurant at the cable car, but walk a bit past it. There you will find a much nicer restaurant with great views from the terrace. From the Petrín tower (about 300 steps) you have a very nice view of the city and several sights in Prague. The costs are 120 CZK. You receive a discount as a student.

Astronomical clockwork

The Astronomical Clock is perhaps one of the most famous sights in Prague and is located on the wall of the Old Town Hall on the Old Town Square (Starometske Namesti). A small spectacle can be seen every hour. Many tourists are eager to see this one-minute spectacle. It is therefore incredibly busy on the square in front of the clock.

Jewish quarter (Josefov)

In the Jewish quarter you can find several synagogues, the Jewish museum and the Jewish cemetery. I found it very impressive to visit. The Jewish cemetery is part of the Jewish museum. Here are more than 12,000 gravestones, all of which are higgledy-piggledy. Many tombstones contain stones and coins. Winding paths take you past the different types of gravestones. An impressive visit.

Restaurants in Prague

The Tavern

This restaurant / eatery is located just outside the city center of Prague next to a park. Before or after dinner you can take a walk here. In this restaurant I have eaten one of the tastiest burgers ever, perhaps the tastiest. For between 140 and 300 CZK you can score a delicious hamburger here. So this is max € 11. Even though this restaurant is not in the center, I definitely recommend you visit it.

LoVeg

Everything on the menu of this restaurant is vegan. This may not sound exciting for some at first, but that would be the wrong idea. The food is very tasty and they have enough choice. The restaurant was not very easy to find. You have to climb some stairs before you get to the restaurant. It is very homely and has an attic room. The homemade lemonade is highly recommended!

Dobrá Cajovna

This cozy teahouse is located on Wenceslaus Square (Vaclavske Namesti) and near the metro stop Müstek. You first walk between the buildings under a kind of arch before you see the tea house. They have more than 50 types of tea. You can also get small sweet and savory snacks, such as baklava. In the background, relaxed music is played and there are various seating areas at tables or cushions in a sitting area. You can relax here from your long city walk.
